What is the Physician Leader Compensation Institute?

Physician compensation is complex—and getting it right is critical. The Physician Leaders Compensation Institute (PLCI) equips new and current physician leaders with the tools, insights, and confidence needed to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of physician and APP compensation.

Led by nationally recognized experts with over 150 years of combined experience, this live-virtual program offers practical, real-world education on:

  • Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, and regulatory compliance

  • Fair market value, commercial reasonableness, and market trends

  • Compensation model strategy and governance

  • Data literacy and productivity benchmarks

  • Managing compensation conversations and organizational change

Whether you’re guiding clinical teams, serving on compensation committees, or shaping payment models, the PLCI prepares you to lead with integrity, support compliance, and drive alignment between pay and performance.

What Topics are Covered at the PLCI?

The Physician Leaders Compensation Institute includes seven focused courses designed to build a strong foundation in physician and APP compensation strategy, compliance, and communication:

  1. Physician and APP Compensation: A Highly Regulated Space
Understand Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and recent enforcement trends to spot compliance risks and apply best practices in compensation design.

  2. Compensation Governance
Explore how governance structures—boards, committees, and physician leaders—shape compensation decisions, promote transparency, and ensure alignment across legal, finance, and compliance teams.

  3. Compensation and Production Data Fundamentals
Learn key compensation and productivity terms, benchmark data sources, and how to avoid common missteps when correlating income with performance.

  4. Fair Market Value & Market Influences
Gain clarity on FMV and Commercial Reasonableness requirements, valuation methodologies, and how physician leaders can explain and defend pay decisions in a complex market.

  5. Compensation Model Design
Compare salary-based, productivity-based, shift-based, and hybrid models—then learn how to build strategic models that balance performance, quality, and organizational goals.

  6. Types and Forms of Compensation
Break down base pay, incentives, call coverage, administrative stipends, and more—while applying best practices for structuring compliant, equitable, multi-layered compensation plans.

  7. Communicating Compensation
Build your skills in navigating sensitive pay conversations, fostering transparency, aligning messaging across leadership, and managing organizational change with clarity and confidence.

Each session is led by industry-leading experts and delivers actionable insights to support fair, strategic, and compliant compensation leadership.

What is the Format of the PLCI?

All PLCI courses are live and delivered virtually, providing real-time interaction without the need to travel. Sessions are scheduled in coordination with all participants to ensure maximum attendance and engagement across the full program. Each cohort is intentionally kept small—typically 10 to 15 physician leaders from across the country—to foster meaningful discussion, peer learning, and direct interaction with expert faculty. This format allows for deeper exploration of complex topics and ensures every participant has the opportunity to engage, ask questions, and learn in a collaborative environment.

What is the Cost and Are Continuing Education Credits Offered?

Participation in the Physician Leaders Compensation Institute (PLCI) is complimentary for AAPCP Organizational Member organizations. Each member organization may register up to two physician leader participants per cohort at no cost. In addition to expert-led instruction and small-group interaction, participants will also earn ACHE continuing education credit upon completion of the program.
